Opt for Fuel Injection When Buying a Honda ATV

Many Honda ATV models have included fuel injection over the years. In fact, the 1982 CX500TC Turbo was the first model to incorporate this technology. At the time, a computer-based fuel mixing system was an innovative feature. Other models were still using an airflow meter. Since then, the system has evolved into Honda's well-known Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) component. This system has become the preferred method for fuel delivery in a variety of Honda products.

How Does Honda's Fuel Injection Work?

In general, fuel injection systems determine how much gas the engine should receive under certain conditions. Honda's version provides real-time monitoring of the vehicle's motor. Essentially, the computer assesses the throttle angle and speed to calculate the needs of the engine. It responds to changes by inputting the fuel mixture as necessary.

The PGM-FI fuel-mapping model prompts the motor to respond by initiating several changes. These include adjustments to coolant temperature and the pressure of the intake port. Calculations are repeatedly performed to maintain the proper fuel mixture. This process allows a Honda ATV to reach its highest performance potential. The control of certain fuel injection components differs across the various ATV models.

As mentioned, each model has a different way of using PGM-FI.

FourTrax Rancher

The Honda FourTrax Rancher comes with a new mapping system for use by the PGM-FI system. It is also fitted with a newly designed oxygen sensor that assists in the responsiveness of the throttle and with increases in power.

FourTrax Foreman 4x4

The Honda FourTrax Foreman 4x4 boasts a fuel injected, 500-class engine. This utility model also incorporates an oxygen sensor. Ride conditions are constantly analyzed by the mapping system to provide updated information to the engine control system. This allows the fuel injection system to vary its activity to maximize fuel efficiency.

FourTrax Rincon

Finally, the Honda FourTrax Rincon is powered by a 675-cubic centimeter, liquid-cooled, four-stroke motor. The PGM-FI system here relies on an oxygen sensor and a twin-plug cylinder head to provide excellent fuel efficiency. The 40-millimeter throttle body also helps the driver with vehicle responsiveness under a wide variety of road conditions.
